Ryan and K-9 Onyz

My name is Ryan, and I am a recipient of K9 Onyx. I grew up in the city of Rochester, and have chosen this city as my home. I am married to my wife of two years, Kiana. I have always had a dream to serve as a police officer. I began my public service career working in hospital security, dispatching, and corrections. I earned bachelor's of science law enforcement degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. In 2017, I became a sworn law enforcement officer. Since that time, I have been in multiple critical incidents. The most impactful calls on me involved children that died on scene, and an officer involved shooting. There came a time when I knew I needed help, and could not do it on my own. I knew I needed to do better when I could not take care of myself, and was experiencing flashbacks and other issues from these incidents. With the support of my supervisor and loving wife, I sought professional help. I have since received the help that I didn't know I needed. I am not one to ask for help, but I am glad I could set aside my pride. The journey is certainly ongoing, and I am excited to continue my development alongside my best friend Onyx. I would be remiss if I did not mention my gratitude towards Ed, the contributors, and the entire Soldiers 6 organization for their heart of service to give first responders and veterans this opportunity.
